Billie Eilish announces third album, out May 17 (1)

BILLIE EILISH fans are “Happier Than Ever” because the star has officially confirmed her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, will be out in its entirety on May 17, 2024.

After hinting at her third project for some time, Eilish teased its impending release with an Instagram post on February 22 captioned, “my album is mastered ” — following it up on April 8 with a post captioned “READY?”.

The post featured a video of a shadowed Eilish sinking into dark blue water, before a hand grasps hers and pulls her upwards. It follows a previous social media stunt a few days earlier which saw the singer add all of her 120 million followers to her “close friends” list, where she posted an Instagram Story with an all blue background, and the words: “I’m telling you something tomorrow”.

On April 8, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter officially made that announcement, revealing the name and release date of her third album alongside a photo of the cover art. Ahead, everything we know about the album so far —including Eilish’s comments after a music publication leaked the tracklist.

What is the name of Billie Eilish’s new album?

Billie Eilish’s third studio album is titled Hit Me Hard and Soft. The singer announced the title along with the cover art — a white door opening into deep blue water, into which Eilish, wearing all black, is sinking.

Eilish shared her enthusiasm for the impending release in the caption for the post, while noting that there won’t be any lead singles dropping ahead of the album’s release, because she wants fans to hear it in its entirety.

“So crazy to be writing this right now i’m nervyyyyy & exciteddd,” she wrote. “Not doing singles i wanna give it to you all at once :PPP finneas and i truly could not be more proud of this album and we absolutely can’t wait for you to hear it. love you love you love you.”

Hit Me Hard and Soft tracklist

Eilish herself has not yet revealed the tracklist for Hit Me Hard and Soft, but mere hours after she confirmed the album’s title, cover art and release date, the song titles were leaked by Rolling Stone.

The article in which the publication revealed the tracklist has since been edited to remove it, but it appears Eilish herself took notice — and wasn’t pleased. In two since-deleted Instagram Stories, the singer wrote a simple “f*ck you” to the music publication.

Hit Me Hard and Soft release date

Eilish has announced that all of Hit Me Hard and Soft will be available on streaming platforms and to purchase on May 17, 2024 — with no singles pre-empting the release.

How many albums has Billie Eilish made?

The record Eilish has just revealed to have been mastered will be her third studio album. It follows 2021’s Happier Than Ever and 2019’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? — which won Album of the Year at the year’s Grammy awards.

Eilish’s most recent release was the single What Was I Made For?. This was recorded for the Barbie movie sound track —which she performed at the 2024 Oscars — and is not tied to any album release. Prior to that, she released an EP titled Don’t Smile At Me in 2017.

Billie Eilish billboards

In early April 2024, a series of mysterious billboards that have appeared around the world seem to suggest the release of Eilish’s third album is imminent.

On April 2, posts by multiple social media users noted the sudden appearance of cryptic billboards in cities around the world with what appear to be lyrics, accompanied by Eilish’s signature “blohsh” mascot — a gender-neutral stick figure person slanting to the left.

The billboards that have been spotted so far in New York City, LA, London, and even Sydney feature phrases including “She’s the headlights I’m the deer,” “I try to live in black and white but I’m so blue” and “did I cross the line?”

Fans were quick to note that the particular shade of blue that the apparent lyrics were written in matches the same blue that Eilish has changed her social media profile pictures to, further cementing theories that a release date — or perhaps even the album itself — could be announced any day now.

What is Billie Eilish’s blohsh symbol?

The Blohsh symbol that has appeared on the teaser billboards is a graphic logo Eilish has used since 2016. Its exact meaning is unknown, but it’s come to represent Eilish with its slanted, gender-neutral design.
