LITTLE ghouls and boys will know witch homes to visit this Halloween thanks to an innovative idea from one Northwich woman.
Sandiway resident Helen Powell has concocted a way of letting children know which neighbours are happy to take part in the trick or treat tradition this October – by displaying a pumpkin or similar spooky decoration.
Helen, who lived in Kingsmead for eight years before moving to Sandiway with husband Stephen and daughters Emily, 13, and Rosie-May, eight, came up with what she calls ‘the pumpkin rule’ in the hope of helping both sides of the Halloween divide.
“I enjoy the theatre of Halloween and the creative opportunities it presents but I am also aware that many people do not wish to partake,” said 38-year-old Helen, who first introduced the idea when she lived in Kingsmead.
“I have had some conversations along the lines of ‘we didn’t see anyone last night, we had lots of sweeties but didn’t’ see anyone in costumes – no one came’ and also the ‘I was desperately trying to get some sleep before my shift started but the doorbell kept ringing’.”
Helen hopes her pumpkin rule will combat this problem and will help children to know which houses to dare to scare at by displaying pumpkins, or similar scary props outside their home.
“By displaying a pumpkin or something similar, either in a window or near the door, children then know they are welcome there,” said Helen.
“If the pumpkin rules take off, children can be taught not to disturb those not wishing to join in.
“Halloween is not about the scariness or any of the publicised connotations for me, it is just an opportunity to think out of the box and be a bit arty.
“People should feel that it’s ok to not want children knocking on their door and to not be pestered on Halloween.
“Using the pumpkin rule means children know where they are welcome and go only to those houses.
“I hope if it is used, it will help both adults who do not wish to join in and the children to enjoy the evening.”

The Pumpkin Rule:
Grown-ups: If you want to join the fun, light a pumpkin on your doorstep, or other spooky decoration. Children will then know that they are welcome.
Children (and supervising adults): Remember if a pumpkin is lit, a knock is welcome. If there is no pumpkin be respectful and do not knock. Stay in your local neighbourhood and stay with friends and a supervising adult. Enjoy showing off your outfits and show all homeowners your respect and manners.
