There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a biscuit. Even refrigerated biscuits are delicious. But social media has a way of convincing me that traditional food should be played with, and I’m here for it. So how do you “outdo” an already tasty thing like a biscuit? You add cheese!

After seeing a reel where the creator adds slices of cheese between layers of biscuit dough, I knew I had to try it. I’m normally happy with a biscuit topped with jam, but the idea of melted cheese in my biscuit made me happier. Ultimately, pulling apart a biscuit and having an accompanying cheese pull seemed like a fabulous idea.

How to Add Cheese to Biscuits

It’s not a complicated process, but I will confess, it can be frustrating. My biscuit dough was relatively sticky, which made it challenging to pull the dough apart into layers. I was only able to separate the dough twice for each biscuit, which I decided was fine, since I was still able to add a healthy half-ounce slice of cheese per layer. After stacking my cheese and dough, I placed the finished products into paper liners, popped them into a muffin pan, and baked them following the biscuit package directions.

How Does It Taste

How could it be anything but good? Flaky biscuit dough layered with gooey cheese is a fantastic combination. I chose pepper Jack cheese and was glad I did because it tasted just like pizza, which had me thinking about all of the other ways you could customize these treats. For example, how about adding a pepperoni or two with the cheese to drive home the pizza flavor? Or what about crumbled bacon or ham to serve with scrambled eggs? I also love the idea of adding sharp Cheddar cheese and a tablespoon of refried beans then topping with pico de gallo and guacamole. You could even try a sweet combination by layering cheese with fig or apricot jam or slices of apple or pear. There’s not enough room to add all of my ideas, but you get the point.

Some Tips to Try For Yourself

Overall, the process is easy, but I have a few tips that might help you along the way.

  • First, use paper liners and a muffin pan. Both vessels help keep the biscuit dough and cheese contained while they’re baking.
  • That leads me to my other tip of building your biscuit in the liner before placing it in your muffin tin. The dough won’t be an exact fit but don’t worry, things will “right” themselves in the oven.
  • Finally, don’t fret if you can’t separate multiple layers of dough. As I mentioned, I could only separate the dough in two places, but I found that to be sufficient, especially since I placed about a half-ounce slice on each layer, which I found to be just the right amount.

Grab your favorite canned biscuits and let your imagination run wild with this trick. You'll be happy you did.
